LAUSD Bul-5298.2, outlines the LAUSD policy regarding Halloween activities. It has been developed “to allow students to participate in enjoyable, positive, and controlled activities, while maintaining student safety. The following guidelines shall apply:
- Students and staff may wear costumes to school according to guidelines established by the school.
- One of the most important mandates is that costumes shall not be demeaning to any person or group based on age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, nationality, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or to any individual staff or student at the school.
- Costumes must comply with the dress code restriction against images that are “vulgar, sexually suggestive, discriminatory, obscene, libelous, contain threats, or that promote illegal or violent content such as the unlawful use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia” (BUL-6494.0) or cause a significant disruption or distraction to the school program.
- No weapons or replica weapons are to be brought to school.
- Masks may not completely obscure the identity of the student. However, masks may be worn during a parade or other specific activity, provided that safety is not hindered.
- No costume can be worn that is unsafe or that may create a safety hazard. Costumes may not impair a student’s vision or movement (e.g., ability to climb stairs).“
In addition to the guidelines outlined in Bul-5298.2, Sun Valley Magnet School Shared Decision Making Council (SDMC) has established the following guidelines:
-
- No costumes may include props or equipment that is unsafe.
- Face painting will be permitted as long as the student is identifiable but full face paint will not be permitted.
- Masks and inflatable costumes are only allowed during the Costume Contest and may not be worn during the
school day. - Those entering the Costume Contest may wear a mask and/or inflatable costume only while on stage.
- Masks and inflatable costumes must be removed afterwards.
- All provisions regarding obscene materials or prohibited substances remain in effect.
Students not dressed according to the above guidelines will be asked to change to the regular school uniform in
accordance with the dress code policy established by SDMC. Masks and/or inflatable costumes may be confiscated, parent/guardian notified, and returned to students at the end of the day should a student not comply with these guidelines.
